MTVU Movies and Music Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion

This was originally posted on the Event Chaser website. Sadly the website only lasted one concert season.

I have lived in the DC/MD/VA area for 10 years and have never been to an event at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. That was one of the reasons, when given the chance to go there to see Fallout Boy, I was thrilled. It meant going to a concert and not having to contend with downtown DC traffic.

The Event This wasn’t your normal stop of Fallout Boy on their Believers Never Die Tour. This was one of three stops chosen by MTVU to be part of the Movies and Music Festival. What does this mean? There were a number of large screens set up in the venue where they showed movie trailers of what are sure to be the summer’s biggest movies between bands. Someone from MTVU was even there making the crowd go insane by telling them that footage from the concert would be shown at the MTV Movie Awards later this year.

There are two more stops that are going to be made in the MTVU Movies and Music Festival.

May 1 – Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, PA May 12 – Time Warner Cable Amphitheater in Cleveland, Ohio

If you get to check out either of these two upcoming dates, you will see more than Fallout Boy. Hey Monday, Cobra Starship, All Time Low and Metro Station are also performing.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is an outdoor amphitheater located on 40 acres known as Symphony Woods. It was built in the early 1960’s by Frank Gehry in such a way that it would not disturb the topography of the area.

If you have general admission tickets and want the best possible view, arrive well before the gates open. Wrist bands for the pit area are given out on a first come first serve basis for anyone with general admission tickets. If you aren’t lucky enough to get a wrist band you will be sitting behind the main seating in the pavilion in the lawn area. You will want to make sure you have a blanket or low back lawn chair to prevent sitting on the bare ground.

The concession stands provide everything from hot dogs to sushi. For drinks you have your choice of Pepsi products and DC’s 9:30 Club provides alcoholic beverages from domestic and imported beers to frozen Margaritas. Make sure you bring your ID. 9:30 staff routinely patrol the grounds checking IDs to make sure that someone did not purchase alcohol for someone under age.

Parking Parking is free at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. The parking lot isn’t paved, you essentially park in a field and have a small hike from the parking lot to the venue so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
